Children's faces are quite
different from adults' faces. The baby face is round but
it gradually becomes oval as the child grows. This is because
the bones of the face and the jaws grow as the whole body
grows, and children's faces change into adult faces. The
peak growth phase of the bones in the face and jaws is not
as distinct as the peak growth of the rest of the body.
The upper and lower jaws do not always grow to the correct
dimensions with respect to one another. It is important
that the upper and lower jaws are in proportion to one another.
The asymmetric growth of either jaw can be modified during
puberty. However, after puberty the jaw bones cease to grow
and no growth modification can occur. If treatment is left
until after puberty then the subsequent treatment can be
considerably more complicated.
Orthodontic specialists specialize in facial
growth and development
as well as the dentition. They can predict and control the
growth and development of the face and jaws. If you are
troubled by, or are suffering from misaligned teeth, we
recommend that you consult with an orthodontic specialist
at the earliest opportunity.
