Adults' jaws are fully developed, and consequently the growth and development of the jaws cannot be controlled by orthodontic treatment alone. Disproportionate jaws will be treated in conjunction with both the departments of Oral-Maxillofacial Surgery and Plastic Surgery to obtain optimum results.

The following section explains what steps we need to take to treat these cases. In the first phase of treatment we correctly align the teeth by attaching an edgewise appliance called a "bracket" to each tooth. This phase of treatment is known as "pre-operating orthodontic treatment" and requires 1 to 2 years to complete. In the second phase of treatment we correct abnormally sized jaws with surgery. The patient is required to stay for 2-3 weeks in the dental hospital for the treatment. Finally, we make minor adjustments to the teeth so that ideal alignment can be achieved. This final phase of treatment is known as"post-operating orthodontic treatment" and requires 6 months to a year followed by a retention period. During the retention period the patient must attend the dental hospital 4-5 times every 6 months to ensure that no relapse occurs. The end of the retention period signals the completion of all treatment.
