Our department has a specialized team for outpatients with maxillo-facial defects, such as cleft lip and/or cleft palate. We have a comprehensive treatment plan for long-term care and have been working closely with other professionals for many years.

Treatment for patients with cleft lip and/or palate is commenced from infancy. First, plastic surgery is performed on the patient's cleft lip and/or palate at the Department of Oral Surgery. Then, the patient is provided with speech training at the Department of Stomatognathic Functional Treatment. Dental caries will be treated at the Department of Pediatric Dentistry, the Dental Clinic for Handicapped people, or the General Dental Clinic.
At the age of around six, when a child's permanent teeth start to erupt, we begin treatment to improve the occlusion by functionally controlling
the growth and development of the jaw. If there are any missing or absent permanent teeth, the Department of Prosthodontics will supplement the tooth, at adolescence, with artificial dentition. We have, so far, successfully treated more than 2,000 patients with malocclusions associated with cleft lip and/or palate.

Maxillofacial defects, such as Treacher Collins' Syndrome, Crouzon's Syndrome, or cleft lip and/or palate can cause frequent dental problems. Our department works closely with others conducting research and exchanging information. One of these institution is the University of Copenhagen, Denmark, who have a worldwide reputation in diagnosing and treating such syndromes. As treatment methods vary from patient to patient, please consult an orthodontic specialist with your particular problem.
