It is possible to treat patients who have periodontal disease

You don't have to hesitate to ask orthodontic treatment even if you have periodontal disease.

Those who are undergoing treatment for periodontal disease

Orthodontic treatment can be commenced immediately as long as periodontal disease is properly controlled by your dentist.

Those who have not received treatment for periodontal disease

If you have periodontal disease and it has not been treated, you need to have it treated before receiving any kind of dental treatment. Osaka University Hospital's Department of Preventive Dentistry and Periodontal Clinic is where periodontal disease is treated. We will refer you to either one of them before your orthodontic treatment is commenced.

How to brush your teeth during treatment

Successful orthodontic treatment will depend upon how well periodontal disease is controlled. After an orthodontic appliance is placed in a patient's mouth, brushing can be very difficult. We provide intra-oral cleaning using dental instruments at each visit.

Our department will demonstrate how to clean your teeth effectively.

However, dental cleaning at the clinic alone is far from sufficient for controlling periodontal disease. Daily care at home is the most important; brushing teeth at least twice a day. We give advice to our patients on how to brush their teeth effectively and assist them in all aspects of oral hygiene planning.

Well-aligned teeth can prevent periodontal disease

Teeth which have been aligned following orthodontic treatment are less likely to be affected by periodontal disease. This is because cleaning of the teeth becomes easier.
